Ever wonder why present is given so much importance as compared to the past or future? Why you’re often told to live in the moment or move on from your past experiences? Well, this is because one of the secondary motives of an average human is to gain power or be in command of the situation. One is helpless when it comes to altering his past or pre-determining his future but what one can do is exercise control over his current situations.
While doing so may sound like a piece of cake to some, it’s actually not. How can one’s consciousness possibly reside in the present always? Your mind is bound to wander off in far off places, thinking about the unknown or even the impossible! Take a simple example of meditation which emphasizes upon you focusing on a certain belief while being mentally and physically present. The moment you intend to do exactly that, the chirping of birds from outside, which often goes unnoticed, becomes a major distraction. Every existing stimulus in your environment is clearly heard and felt regardless of its intensity or consistency.
Apart from distractions, what makes living in the present difficult is the pain that is associated with your past. One tends to ruminate on his past and generalizes the outcomes onto the rest of his life. He deems himself helpless when he really does have the power to make things right. What he chooses to do today will affect his life tomorrow. If he chooses to be miserable then miserable will he stay but if he chooses to rise from the ashes and come back stronger then there’s nothing that can stop him from achieving his goals. Regrets and fears are the major hindrances that one experiences while making progress in life. Guilt has the potential to consume you silently whereas fears impose restrictions on an individual in every way possible. Individuals must be taught how to overcome such obstacles and concentrate on their present instead of being given useless, dry advice.
Being aware and existing in your present provides you with useful information which can serve as a foundation for your future decisions, information that’ll allow you to make a distinction between right and wrong, then and now, knowledge that would motivate you in behaving differently from how you did in the past; it’ll help prevent you from repeating the same mistakes again. Your present is a learning experience that enables your healing process and ensures the onset of a change in you.
Life can most certainly turn out to beautiful only if you work hard to bring about a desirable future. Start now, because if not now then when?
